The pet shops play on the fact that the little one's in their *care* are usually below par healthwise and therefor likely to be snapped up by someone who cannot bear to see them in these conditions.

I agree 100%, if they weren't there in the first place, they wouldn't have to be rescued! We too didn't undergo any kind of check - we may not have been allowed to keep animals for all they know!! they didn't even ask where we'd be keeping him, if we hadn't any previous experience etc etc it's very worrying. I guess it's like the fur trade....if people didn't buy into it, it couldn't continue as a profitable business.
