Is it possible that your friend's dog has kidney disease rather than kidney failure? My old gsd Kudos (RIP) was diagnosed with it when he was 7 and he was on meds and a special diet, but he went on to live a full and happy life, finally succumbing to a severe stroke at 13 years of age. I think with kidney failure it is sadly terminal, and often very suddenly and quickly.
