Hey there
I use a sewing machine for the vast majority, and hand-finish items that need closing (like when you turn a hammock the right way out after machine sewing). It makes a much nicer finish if you can hand-sew
I use a domestic brother sewing machine. When buying one, the most important thing is to go for a good name - Brother, Singer etc. Then you can get a relatively simple one, and know that it's going to last a long time. Argos usually have a good range of simple (and cheap) but well-known brands. Dont get one of those tiny ones that just do straight-stitch - the tension is never right, and they never last longer than a month!
Hope that helps
