In the wild I have never seen snails bury themselves. They always climb up grass stems and plants. At least the professional ones do!!

The only reason they bury in tanks of soil is that their foot is so clogged with soil particles that their mucus membrane (their foot) cannot get a grip on the side of the tank - not helped by heat mats that dry out the mucus.
