The fact he's drinking a lot in one go ( like humans when actually thirsty ) shows he's either on the verge of or actually is dehydrated, neither of which is good for the kidneys, for one thing.
For this reason I would switch him to an all wet diet ( you can always add a little water ) and if symptoms persisted I would have have him vet checked, just to be on the safe side. Yes, kittens can and do suffer from renal problems-more commonly due to infections and occasionally PKD-as opposed to the chronic form seen in older cats!
Alternatively the wet you're currently feeding may have a high sodium content.
