I'm new to owning kittens too and one of mine had vomitting and diarrhea for a day (it is scary when it first happens).

The vet said her tummy felt a bit thick and she could have managed to eat something she wasn't meant to or chewed on something around the house (I wouldn't be surprised cos out of my two she is the most nosey and even tries sniffing around our dinner plates - naughty!!). The vet gave her an antibiotic injection as she had some mild cat flu symptoms and also gave us some special bland food - Royal Canin - sensitivity control wet food to feed for a couple of days until it cleared up - and it did.
