But thats the owners decision to make not the vets. The owner should be given all the facts, options, and potential outcomes, as hard as those maybe to hear, and from that be given time to make an informed decision. I think its a poor vet that doesn't at least try to that. Some people will make it clear they do just want to be told what to do, but not everyone is like that.
A similar thing happened to a friend whose cat had lymphatic sarcoma. Her vet decided she would not be willing to pay for chemo, and didn't really agree with it being given to cats, because was under the false impression they did not do well on it, so never gave her the option of treatment. Luckily she knew there was a treatment, was more than willing to pay for it and pushed for a referal. 4 years on, her cat is still in full remission, and enjoying his life.
I do agree though with kidney failure, in some cases you can get lucky and help maintain them, but most seem to go down very very fast despite throwing everything at them, and age has to play a large part in that.
